Help Semenya’s family and also millions of poor

2009-09-03 15:40

I WAS among the millions of thrilled South Africans and was pleased to congratulate our IAAF World Championship medal winners, Caster Mokgadi Semenya and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi.

And, of course, I condemned the sexist and racist mentality and jealousy towards one of our own.

But I do not understand how these winnings push Limpopo’s local government to decide to build Semenya’s family a house.

The reality of the matter is that there are many poor people living in areas of Limpopo including those in Mosehlong Village, Moletji, where Semenya lives, who have no houses.

I am speaking about poor people who have no running water and can’t even afford to buy 20 litres.

Why should alone Semenya alone? What about the other heroes who did and are still doing this country proud?

I am talking about Andries “local is lekker” Sebola, an outstanding player and soccer star of Ria Stars and later Orlando Pirates’ leading goalscorer.

What about the late Lesley Manyathela who was also leading goalscorer in South African football? There are too many to count.

The government of Limpopo must go to Ga-Mothapo, Ga-Mmakata, Ga-Mmamabolo and Ga-Molepo villages and see how people are suffering.
