High-profile funeral for KZN judge president

2011-04-16 09:59

President Jacob Zuma, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe and KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize are among the hundreds of mourners who have arrived at Hilton College outside Pietermartizburg for the funeral of KZN Judge President Qédusizi Msimang.

The jurist (60) passed away last week from a heart condition.

The current and former chief justices, judges and friends and family members have packed out the college chapel for the funeral service, which will be addressed by Mkhize and Zuma.

His body will then be interred at the Georgedale Cemetery at Edendale outside Pietermaritzburg, from which Msimang hailed.

A long-standing legal pracitioner, human rights advocate and jurist, Msimang became a household name in South Africa during the corruption trial of Zuma when he threw the case out of course, slamming the National Prosecuting Authority for abuse of procedures in its pursuit of the then deputy president.

Msimang served as a director of the Legal Resources Centre in Durban during the apartheid era and made a name for himself as a stickler for the law both in the courtroom and from the bench.
