High winds down Cape power lines

2010-10-11 07:42

Electricity supplies were restored to some areas of Cape Town today following gale force winds yesterday.

The winds blew overhead power lines down, affecting supplies in Heideveld, Kensington, Manenberg, Belhar, Parow, Thornton, Bergvliet, Plumstead, Retreat and Rugby.

Overnight repairs restored services to Heideveld, Kensington, Bergvliet and Retreat, the city said in a statement.

Residents with no power can report this to the city’s corporate call centre on 0860 103 089 or if residents cannot get through due to high call volumes, they can SMS 31220 with a short description of the complaint, account or meter number and contact details.

Flooding blocked drains and service disruptions can also be reported to the call centre or via SMS to 31373.

Motorists were requested to drive carefully on wet roads and to maintain a safe following distance.

Further information regarding delays and deviations on roadways can be obtained from the city’s Transport Information Centre on 0800 656 463.

The wet and windy conditions that are currently being experienced will improve during the course of the week.

The city’s disaster response team remains on high-alert and will maintain close contact with service authorities.

Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, manager for systems integration and special projects, said the storm was subsiding.
