Hlaudi Motsoeneng has been appointed, temporarily, as the SABC’s acting group CEO – sort of.

The incumbent, Anton Heunis, is ill, SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told City Press yesterday.

According to Kganyago, the broadcaster needed “somebody for the period [Heunis] is in hospital to lead”.

He added: “That is how Hlaudi is acting in the position.”

Motsoeneng is set to fulfil the group CEO role until next week but “if Anton is not well, it could be extended”, said Kganyago.

Later yesterday, Kganyago clarified that Heunis was ill but not in hospital.

Meanwhile, Motsoeneng said he had received a “delegated, formal” letter that gave him permission to “do the operations” of group CEO – but this didn’t mean he carried the title “acting group CEO”.

“I still work with Anton, we still work together and I consult with him,” said Motsoeneng.

“The way people are putting it is wrong. Anton isn’t well but he’s still working. He is still acting group CEO, but I am doing the operations in consultation with him. We work as a team at the SABC – why is the issue Hlaudi?

“I’m not acting, I have just been delegated to do his operations but in consultation with him.

“If I was acting, I would have letter to say I’m acting.”

Late last month, the Western Cape High Court ordered the SABC to suspend Motsoeneng as SABC chief operating officer and institute disciplinary proceedings against him within 14 days.

He is appealing the decision.
