A high-octane local heist thriller about an honest cop turned crook is getting a Hollywood makeover.

iNumber Number is the first South African film to be picked up for a Hollywood remake, says delighted writer and director Donovan Marsh.

The day after he and producer Harriet Gavshon, from Quizzical Pictures, spoke to City Press about the film, they received more good news.

iNumber Number has also been picked up for distribution by Wrekin Hill Entertainment in Los Angeles.

This means the film will open in cinemas across the US next year.

After that, iNumber Number will be remade from scratch for the international market through Universal Pictures by the creators of the hugely popular Fast & Furious franchise, Chris Morgan and Emile Gladstone.

Says Marsh: “I’ve been in the industry for 20 years, but this definitely tops the list of achievements.”

iNumber Number’s success story began with its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, where it was widely praised by critics.

Strangely, its creator is a little surprised at the film’s upward trajectory.

This is partly because iNumber Number was originally only intended as a launch pad for lead actor Sdumo Mtshali, who won Quizzical’s reality show, Class Act.

The film was shot in Joburg and Soweto, but when it is remade, it will be set in Detroit and feature American stars.

Marsh says he’d love to see Dr Dre replace Mtshali in the lead role and Mos Def replace Presley Chweneyagae, who plays Mtshali’s partner.

iNumber Number opens in South Africa in March 2014.
