Honorary degree for Cronin

2011-05-09 14:07

Deputy transport minister Jeremy Cronin will be given an honorary degree at the University of Fort Hare, the department has announced.

The university will be acknowledging, recognising and appreciating Cronin’s work through the years, the department said in a statement. The ceremony will take place at the university’s East London campus on Tuesday morning.

“Cronin is both an activist and an intellectual [and] contributed immensely and in various capacities in the war against apartheid... He worked in the underground unit of the national liberation movement as early as the late sixties. He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment from 1976 to 1983 for his activities,” the department said.

Cronin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Arts degree from the Sorbonne, Paris, France – both awarded with distinction. He lectured at the University of Cape Town from 1973 to 1976.

“His extensive writings in the progressive publications domestically and internationally include the African Communist, Umsebenzi, Umrabulo and Mayibuye, Monthly Review and Links and the Ideologies of Politics, which he edited in 1975.”
