Hostel killing suspect in court in January

A man arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two policemen in Soweto will appear in court in January.

The police’s Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the man was still in hospital as police had shot him after he allegedly shot at them when stopped for questioning.

He did not appear in court in person for his hearing today, but was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on January 31.

The three people who were in the car with him when police pulled them over on the N1 for questioning on Wednesday, had already appeared in the same court and were charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm.

Their return court date was not immediately known.

Warrant Officer Dzialwa Reuben Kundwani (48) and Constable Letjeku Abel Thenga (25) were killed at Mzimhlope hostel in Soweto just before 8pm on Sunday.

A massive police operation led to a search of hostels in the area and a tip-off led police to the men.
