How To ... Avoid a plastic-surgery nightmare

2014-04-13 09:27

Today, in City Press, we tell the stories of people who have lived through plastic surgery nightmares.

Para-athlete Heugene Murray approached a Benoni plastic surgeon to help him create fullness in his lower leg through calf augmentation but had to have his lower leg amputated instead.

A 36-year-old woman who wanted her breast size reduced for health reasons was left disfigured.

Here are ten important questions to ask yourself and your plastic surgeon before deciding to go under the knife.

» Why do you want to have plastic surgery and what do you hope to achieve by it?

» How did you know about the plastic surgeon and have you seen people on whom he/she has worked?

» Is the plastic surgery registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa?

» Was the surgeon trained specifically in the field of plastic surgery?

» How many years of plastic surgery training has the surgeon had?

» Where will the procedure be performed and will there be a professional anaesthetist to sedate you?

» How many procedures of this type has the surgeon performed?

» Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

» What are the risks and complications associated with my procedure?

» What are my options if I am dissatisfied with the outcome of my surgery?
