How To ... Get hold of your municipal bill if the post has let you down

2013-04-18 09:14

Struggling to pay your municipal bill because it hasn’t arrived in the post after the Post Office strike?

Here’s how to do it in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

Customers are encouraged to call 0860 Joburg (562874) for balances due, says Stanley Maphologela, spokesperson for the Revenue Shared Services Centre in the City of Johannesburg metro.

1. Choose option 1.

2. Have your account number ready.

3. Choose option 1 again when prompted.

If you don’t know your account number, choose option 4, which takes you through to the next available consultant.

You can also visit your nearest customer service centre for your balance. But if snaking queues in municipal offices are not your idea of how to spend a day, you can register to receive your municipal account by email. Here’s how:

1. Go to this link.

2. Complete your personal information and submit.

3. Once registered, logon details will be emailed to you.

4. Your statements will be emailed to you on a monthly basis. According to Maphologela, the city is currently billing more than a million customers. This means that billing takes place in different cycles on a daily basis. But, within 24 hours after the account holder is billed, statements are emailed out to customers’ preferred email addresses.

5. Once registered, you will be able to use the pin code on your statement, which is unique to your account, to download at least 6 months’ statements from the website.

Maphologela says customers who are in arrears and want to make arrangements to pay off their debt can visit customer service centres across the city of Johannesburg and sign an acknowledgement of the debt. Find out where your nearest customer centre is:

1. Click here.

2. Find the centre closest to you on the Region A to Region G links.

The City of Joburg says residents are required to pay their accounts even if a statement was not received.

Thabo Mofokeng, spokesperson for the Ethekwini Municipality, says its customers were not severely affected by the strike. But there have been some complaints.

For balances, customers can contact their nearest service branch, a list of which can be accessed here.

Customers who have not received their bills in the post can also obtain them by emailing

To view bills electronically, eThekwini metro account holders can:

1. Click here.

2. Enter your ID number and password if already registered.

3. If not, follow the prompts to register.

Asked if the metro would cut the services of people with accounts in arrears because of the Post Office strike, Mofokeng said the municipality would consider each case on its on merits.

Cape Town

Kylie Hatton, media manager of the City of Cape Town, says only a few complaints related to the Post Office strike had been received from City of Cape Town property owners living in Johannesburg.

She says instructions have been given to the municipal call centre to assist by sending those affected duplicate municipal invoices.

City of Cape Town account holders can:

1. Click here.

2. If you have registered, you will be able to access your information by logging in with your assigned login details.

3. If you have not registered, scroll down and select “register here”.

Customers can also call 0860 103 089 or email for statements to be emailed to them.

Said Hatton: “In these instances the City will not restrict the water or disconnect the electricity supplies due to non-payment of these accounts for one month or longer if necessary.”
