How To … Make your 67 minutes count

2014-07-13 15:00

Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang says this year’s Mandela Day work is centred on three pillars?–?literacy and education; shelter and food and safety.

“Without these elements there is no dignity. There is no dignity in illiteracy, being unemployable, having no shelter and being hungry and that is what we are focusing on this year,” he says.

To help you choose your Mandela Day project, the foundation has launched a new website on which you can find causes close to your heart?– and close to your home.

Visit, type in your location, a date and the kind of project you think you’re interested in. From there you’ll be directed to options that have been checked and verified by the foundation.

Hatang says 67 minutes?–?a nod to the 67 years Mandela spent for the public good?–?is a great start, but there’s always more to be done.

“Don’t make this a one-day wonder of 67 minutes. If there is a gogo who is living with school going children in your area, assist those children with their homework. That does a world of good.”
