» Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa invites the public to join corporate companies and church-based organisations to package 6 700 meals in 67 minutes.

Date: July 18

Place: Sandton Convention Centre, Exhibition Hall 2

Time: 9am – 6pm

The event will have four shifts where meal packages will be made throughout the day. Here is the schedule:

9am – 10.07am

12pm – 1.07pm

2pm – 3.07pm

5pm – 6.07pm

» Nelson Mandela Square and SAfm will be collecting nonperishable foodstuffs and books.

Drop-off points: The dome promotional court on the bridge in Nelson Mandela Square, outside Checkers Hyper and outside Woolworths in Sandton City.

Who benefits: The collected items will be donated to Iphutheng Primary School, corner London Road and Eighteenth Avenue, Alexandra.

Time: 9am – 12pm

» Cheesekids for Humanity will have a #CheeseDay Mandela Day event, where they will start with a “community takeover” in Atteridgeville for a community project that will roll out over the next three to four months.

Cape Town

» Food Bank SA is hosting a bring-and-pack food hamper drive

Place: Cape Town Civic Centre’s Podium Hall, next to the Mandela exhibition

Time: 11am – 2pm

» Paint a preschool. The Centre for Early Childhood Development and See-Saw-Do will identify preschools in need of makeovers, and, once themes are decided, together with principals, they will prepare and prime the walls for volunteers to come and paint them on Thursday, July 18.

» Habitat for Humanity will participate in building and funding 67 houses.

Date: 16 – 20 July

The organisation builds houses in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

» Gandhi Development Trust & Durban University of Technology (DUT) will be engaging in the Umgeni River Mouth Cleanup Project.

Activity: Picking up litter and debris with learners from schools and students from the environment society of the DUT

Place: Durban, Umgeni River

Date: July 18

Time: 9am

The We Are Durban organisation, along with the eThekwini Transport Authority, will be building a new crèche.

Place: Qalakahle Crèche, Mansel Market, Durban

Time: 8am

Activity: Besides refurbishing the old structure and building a new facility, the organisation will take the kids to People’s Park.

We Are Durban’s director, Linda Morrison, said members of the public are encouraged to “play with the kids at the park or back at the crèche at 1pm”.

» Ride for sight for Nelson Mandela: Brien Holden Vision Institute and the Revolution Motorcycle Club will visit Woza Moya Community Centre in Ixopo to screen the eyes of 250 community members and provide reading glasses where necessary.

Place: Woza Moya Community Centre, Ixopo. The participants will depart from the Brien Holden Institute offices on Umbilo Road at 6am

Date: July 18

Time: Screening will begin at 9am and the food will be distributed at 12pm

Melusi Vidima of the Brien Holden Vision Institute said members of the public can volunteer to be “marshals who will direct people to different stations”.

Free State

Mass ride for ‘No Student Hungry’ at the University of the Free State

» Riders from Country Trax will participate in a mass ride from the University of the Free State to Mangaung, Heidedal and Brandwag on Mandela Day.

Venue: University of the Free State

Time: 9.30 am – depart from the university’s RAG offices

Activities: A cleanup of Mangaung, Heidedal and Brandhof

Between 12pm and 1pm, the public is invited to join in on the R5 “coin line”, where coins will be placed on the university’s logo at the Red Square in front of the Bloemfontein Campus’ main building.

Annelise Visagie of the No Student Hungry campaign said “the R5 coins will help in aiding to provide meals for 80 students at the institution”.

Eastern Cape

» Impendulo Foundation will be handing over 20 computers and planting trees at Zimbane School.

Venue: Zimbane School, Qunu

Date: 18 July

Time: 10am

“The Zimbane School project is the first that will help us in identifying other schools that need help similar help,” said Kopano Moshoeshoe.

Moshoeshoe asked the public to help in raising an extra R4 000 to ensure that the computer project is sustained. “We need R10 000 and have raised R6 000 so far,” he said.

» Impendulo will also be hosting a Nelson Mandela Fundraising Gala Dinner with the aim of building a Development Centre for the Zimbane community in Umtata.

Fee: R350 per person and R3 500 to book a table
