How many RDP houses can R1.1m build?

2009-09-11 14:47

IT IS indeed disturbing to see that our ministers are cruising around in flashy, latest-model cars while the people who put them in power are struggling to make ends meet.

What is going on in provinces such as Limpopo is an eyesore. Pupils are still taught under trees and some still travel long distances to get to school, yet Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande and his cronies buy cars worth millions – at the taxpayers’ expense.

Politicians are enriching themselves and all we get are empty promises. Nzimande should not try to pull the wool over our eyes.

Why not follow in Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s footsteps and buy a reasonably priced car?

Worse still is that Nzimande shouted from the rooftops about the greed in the public sector, yet he seems to have changed his tone.

What about people who live in informal settlements? What about the residents of Tshirolwe, Matsa and Tshikuwi near Nzhelele in Limpopo, where taps were installed 15 years ago yet remain dry?

How many RDP houses could R1.1 million build? How many classes and school toilets can it pay for?

Some pupils still use the bushes to respond to nature’s call, risking snake bites and even rape.

Yet Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda, Nzimande and other government fat cats waste our taxes on expensive vehicles.

Nzimande and company should do the right thing and return those luxury cars.
