How to ... save on airfare

We’re celebrating South African female bloggers this week and we can’t get enough of their handy tips.

Recently, blogger and fashionista Thithi Nteta booked her trip to various parts of Europe rather cheaply – and then shared how she did it.

Thinking of going go to Prague and Croatia, she made her first big saving by booking her return flight to Prague well in advance. She did it in January using the money she saved from not taking a holiday in December. Here’s the rest of the lowdown:

Check your benefits

A return flight worked out cheaper than booking two one-way tickets. She and her travel partner also saved nearly R2?500 on their flights using their Discovery Vitality membership benefits to book.

Sharing is caring

They booked their accommodation through share-economy accommodation community Airbnb. Residents of the city you are visiting rent out rooms, but you want to make sure they’re gracious hosts.

Nteta recommends that you email them prior to making a booking to get a sense via their email etiquette about what kind of people they are. She also recommends reading the reviews on Airbnb and paying attention to how hosts respond to the negative feedback they get.

Start with the places that have verified photos, which basically means that someone who has been there can verify that the apartment or space looks the same as it does in the photo.

Fly away

The rest of the trip to Rome, Paris and Amsterdam cost her an average of R3?500 for two multidestination flights with Iberia Airlines and about R920 for one train trip.

Flights were booked through Expedia because, unlike Travelstart or Flightsite, Expedia allows you to book your own multidestination flights. Expedia also has a rewards programme.

Nteta’s accommodation in Trastevere in Rome was booked at a discounted price because of the flight bookings she had made.
