Hundreds gather for thanksgiving ceremony to mark 20 years of freedom

2014-08-15 11:22

Hundreds of people have packed the Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Soweto, for a national interfaith thanksgiving ceremony today.

The ceremony is being held to celebrate 20 years of freedom in South Africa.

Among those present are North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau and Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini.

Congregants have travelled from as far as the Northern Cape and the Western Cape to be part of the ceremony.

People from different denominations are dressed in colourful church regalia for the occasion.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to deliver the main address.

Dlamini’s spokesperson Lumka Oliphant told The New Age this week that the aim of this celebration was to thank the faith-based sector for the work they continue to do in building a better South Africa.

Through the celebration, the government sought to build a stronger, more dynamic and productive partnership with faith-based organisations, united behind moving the country forward in line with Vision 2030 in the National Development Plan, she said.
