Hurricanes tame Lions 38-27

Wellington, New Zealand – The Wellington Hurricanes produced a second-half burst to tame the Golden Lions 38-27 today in a dead-rubber.

A dominant display by Ma’a Nonu saw the Hurricanes home as he scored a try after the break and set up winger Hosea Gear’s second five-pointer to give the hosts victory after they entered the second-half trailing 20-15.

With both teams out of play-off contention, Hurricanes captain Andrew Hore said the win gave his team momentum heading into next season.

“We built pressure in second half,” he said. “It’s looking pretty good, we want to make sure we get something out of this year, so we can start next year on step two or three instead of starting from scratch again.”

Lions skipper Doppies La Grange, whose first-half try gave the South Africans reason for early optimism, was left lamenting a mistake-ridden performance after the break.

“We were a bit unlucky and have got ourselves to blame,” he said.
