I heart Jozi – Bokke song and dance just not zef enough

2011-09-09 08:09

I have been rather confused recently. It seems my TV keeps tuning in to scenes from June 2010.

I keep seeing vuvuzelas, amakarapa and those irritating multicoloured wigs that blocked my view of the screen at the Newtown Fan Park.

And then this morning, while Khanyi Mbau and Oskido proved that with the right software and producer anyone can sing, I realised (and soon thereafter tweeted) “this Bokke song and dance is so not rugby. Just looks like fan gear recycled from the Soccer World Cup.”

I have been to enough rugby matches to know that a box struggling to carry a round of drinks, team flags, T-shirts and caps and overpriced boerewors rolls says “go rugby” far louder than any vuvuzela.

It’s just so sad that in our quest to nationalise the game and attract “non-traditional rugby fans” as Vuyo Mbuli said, ever so politically correct, we’ve lost the culture and nuances that make a rugby match an awesome experience.

The official supporter song would definitely have had my support had it been a collaboration between Kalawa Jazmee Records and Jax Panik or Die Antwoord.

They already have crossover appeal and an interesting take on music that has us all a little more fascinated with Afrikaner youth culture, slang and music.

I’m all for nation building and unity – as long as we don’t replace a diverse culture for the same bland mixing pot of recycled motifs.
