The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) was investigating an estimated 6 000 cases against police, the ICD’s executive director, Francois Beukman, said in Pretoria today.

Addressing the National Press Club, Beukman said that of the 6 000 cases, he estimated that 2 500 were criminal cases, while about 2 000 were criminal matters.

ICD spokesman Moses Dlamini said he believed that 40% of the cases were criminal matters, the majority of which were crimes such as assault, murder, attempted murder and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

Dlamini said that very often police training came up as an issue during such cases.

Currently, the ICD had 292 service staff and about 100 investigative officers, Beukman said.
