ICD probes death of ANC Youth League branch chairperson

2011-09-05 13:56

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has sent a team to Esikhawini, outside Empangeni, to interview relatives of slain former ANC Youth League branch chairperson Qinisani Gwala.

“We have sent our team to interview the family,” said ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini.
Police shot Gwala inside his house on Saturday.

Gwala (36) had been arrested at Mabuyeni Reserve in Esikhawini in connection with the murder of Eshowe police officer Captain Kevin Marallich (53), killed on August 28 last year.

Police spokesperson Phindile Radebe said Gwala asked to go home with the police to collect his identity document.
While inside his room, Gwala used a .38 revolver to fire several shots at the police through a window. They returned fire and shot him dead, Radebe said.

Radebe said police had found two unlicensed firearms with Gwala when he was killed.

The Mercury newspaper reported that another man suspected of involvement in Marallich’s murder was killed in a shootout with Durban Organised Unit officers on August 30 last year.

KwaZulu-Natal community safety and liaison MEC Willies Mchunu raised concerns about the shooting.
“This is a huge concern because when police and suspects are confronting each other, we don’t wish to lose any of them,” he said in a statement.

“I am, however, confident that the ICD will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of this case.”
