IFP supporter gunned down outside court

2012-10-15 13:42

An Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) member has been shot outside the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court in full view of police and television cameras.

IFP councillor Mdu Nkosi said the fatal shots were fired as he was giving an interview following the appearance of four men in connection with the shooting of an IFP supporter a little more than a week ago at Durban’s KwaMashu hostels.

Nkosi identified the IFP supporter who was killed as Siya Dlamini.

“I was giving an interview when the e.tv journalist warned me and then I heard two shots,” said Nkosi.

According to Nkosi, an NFP councillor in the eThekwini Municipality was arrested by police and bundled into a police van. He identified the NFP councillor as the shooter.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the shooting.

Nkosi asked: “Who will protect us if this happens right in front of the police?”

The four men who were appearing in court were arrested last Friday in connection with the shooting of Cebisile Shezi (31) on October 6.

Shezi, who was wearing an IFP T-shirt, was shot dead near the Thembalihle train station in KwaMashu shortly after Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa had addressed IFP supporters at a sports field in A-section of KwaMashu where the hostels are located.

In another incident, a woman was grazed in the face by a bullet and taken by police to hospital.

The area has been tense since the abduction and killing of IFP councillor Themba Xulu by five men pretending to be police officers from the Pinetown police station.

No one has been arrested in connection with his abduction and killing.

National Freedom Party general secretary Nhlanhla Khubisa said he could not comment because he was not aware of the shooting.
