Idols: Everybody loves Dave, or do they?

2011-09-27 06:57

Only one of this year’s Idols contestants has been able to move the judges to their feet in applause all at the same time – 21-year-old Dave van Vuuren.

“Music is my sole purpose and my everything in life,” he says. “Through my music I want to show that it’s possible to love something with your whole heart and soul without having fear.”

His rendition of Don McLean’s Vincent (Starry Starry Night) on Sunday had Idols judge Unathi Msengana speechless and in tears and Randall Abrahams saying: “There are very few singers in the world who can take an overplayed cheesy song and turn it into something that means a lot, and you did that.”

Van Vuuren’s first two performances were disappointing and he appeared fatigued. After the third song he told the judges: “I think it’s about time I do my own music,” when asked by Msengana how he was feeling.

“Even though I don’t perform my own songs, the experience has been great. I come alive when I am making my own music but I wouldn’t discourage any aspirant singers to not sing covers because that’s how you make it,” he said.

Last week, Van Vuuren landed in the bottom three with his friend Freddie Van’Dango, who was sent packing.

Gail Nkoane, who made it to the Top 10 in last year’s season said: “His own stuff is what he’d do best. Right now you can see he’s a little fatigued because it gets like that with all the pressure.

“Because not even your family is there to support you, you get to a point where you are like: Can this just end?”

Van Vuuren is part of an Indie Soul band called Free The Animals with his two best friends.

“We make very passionate, soulful music that makes you feel happy and brings out that forgotten love of music.”

Pam Koppel, Danny K’s manager and mother thinks Van Vuuren is “edgy, usual, passionate and really hungry to win this competition. He’s a great artist.”

While Nkoane thinks Crushanda Forbes will win, Koppel reckons she will be the next to go and Mark Haze will win it because he appears to have the biggest following.
