If we can’t get it right for Madiba ...

2013-06-24 08:59

It is the one thing we had to get right. The medical care of not only South Africa, but the world’s most beloved leader.

The fact that Nelson Mandela’s ambulance broke down and was stranded on the side of the road for over 40 minutes is scandalous. We should be outraged.

Just as we should be outraged every time a South Africa experiences poor service delivery or bad healthcare. If we can’t even get it right for Mandela, what hope is there for people living in far-flung rural areas?

It is good that presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj admitted that it happened. But his statement once again – as has been the case with all updates surrounding the health of Nelson Mandela – reveals only the barest of details.

There are still so many unanswered questions.

Why was there only one ambulance sent to transport Mandela, surely presidential protocol demands that there be a back-up plan?

And certainly not the kind of back-up plan that takes over 40 minutes.

It is too much. It is unbearable to think of a man who is part of the very fabric of our country, who together with his comrades has done so much for South Africa – suffering the indignity of waiting on the side of the road in freezing winter temperatures for a back-up ambulance to arrive.

We have to be better than this.
