I’m still premier – Mokonyane

2010-05-08 09:48

Premier Nomvula Mokonyane took in her stride the news that her

rival for the position of chairman received the lion’s share of the votes in the

ANC’s Gauteng leadership election.

“I’m still the premier, and I’m going to proceed being the

premier,” she said shortly after it was announced that Paul Mashatile would

retain his position as chairman of the ANC in the province.

Mokonyane received 364 of the votes cast, while Mashatile received

513.

“I’m fine. I am humbled that so many members of the ANC wanted to

have me as their chairman,” she said.

Mokonyane declined a nomination to sit on the province’s executive

committee. “Other people, I think, should come in.”

Mokonyane remains a member of the party’s national leadership

structure, the national executive committee.

Mashatile’s win poses a challenge for Mokonyane as it creates two

centres of power – one leader in the ANC and another in government in the

province.

The conference continued today, with delegates rounding up

discussions on policy matters.

Resolutions will be adopted later in the day and Mashatile is

expected to deliver an address as the newly elected chairman, setting the tone

for the way forward.
