Infections, deaths worry TB body

THE SA Medical Association (Sama) today said it was concerned about

the increasing number of tuberculosis (TB) infections and mortality rate from

the disease.

The organisation said HIV increased the risk of developing TB

although not all people with the disease were HIV positive.

“HIV and Aids are common in socio-economically stressed

communities, and these same communities are also vulnerable to TB. Of note is

that health care workers are six times more likely than the ordinary person to

contract drug-resistant TB.

“We are concerned about health professionals like doctors, nurses

and radiographers who contract TB while on duty,” said Dr Phophi

Sama public sector doctor members were to participate in a fun walk

at Mokopane in Limpopo today, she said.

“We dedicate this walk to all those who suffer from TB and bring

them a message of hope.

“TB is curable and we call upon all our members in the different

hospitals to partner with stakeholders and observe this day while continuing

with programmes and campaigns devoted to fighting this disease,” she said.
