Inmates kill fellow awaiting trial prisoner

Four awaiting trial prisoners at the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court in Polokwane will face additional charges of murder after allegedly killing a fellow prisoner today, Limpopo police said.

Thulani Mathebula, 21, Thomas Nkuna, 21, Prince Jacky Mkhari, 27, and Tshepo Mathebula, 18, were at court for their trials, when Thulani Mathebula allegedly assaulted another 25-year-old prisoner.

“After realising that the victim had died, Mathebula was then assisted by the other prisoners to wash the victim’s body and his blood-soaked clothes,” said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“They then dressed him with other clothes to mislead police into thinking he had died of natural causes.”

The Independent Complaints Directorate were investigating whether the officers on duty were negligent.

The four would appear at the same court on June 13 on murder charges.

The victim was charged with assault while Mathebula was charged with two counts of rape.
