Insurance agents appear in court

2011-03-15 09:01

Twelve Metropolitan insurance agents appeared in court following their arrest in Tzaneen in connection with fraud allegations, Limpopo police said today.

The 12 appeared in the Tzaneen Magistates Court, and were granted bail for varied amounts, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

The twelve allegedly submitted fraudulent claims on behalf of unsuspecting clients to Sars through e-filing, and then requested a fee of between 20% and 25% of the amount for this “service”.

It is believed that millions of rand were accumulated in this way.

Mulaudzi said that even though the arrests were not effected on the same day – with six arrested last Tuesday, three on Friday and three yesterday – they all appeared in court together.

Two were granted bail of R2 000 each, one was granted bail at R3 300, and the others at R20 000.

The case was postponed to May 13 for further investigation.
