Insurer agrees to refund towing and storage costs

An insured driver who was under-paid because the assessor submitted incorrect information has finally been paid out in full.

Nomvelelo Buswana of Protea North in Soweto acknowledged receipt of R17 000 after Hotline helped her in a dispute with African Independent insurance brokers over the release of the money.

The dispute dates back to August when the nominated driver of Buswana’s Nissan UD60 truck was involved in an accident in Polokwane, Limpopo. The truck was towed from the accident scene to a repair centre in Tzaneen.

She paid towing and storage costs amounting to R17 000 from her pocket while the insurer finalised her claim and this, she said, was discussed with the insurer.

“The storage costs were sky-rocketing and I couldn’t risk losing my truck.

“After promising that they would pay out a refund, suddenly they refused to pay back my R17 000. So I ran straight to Hotline,” she said.

On the day of the accident, the driver lost control of the truck on a steep hill and rolled backwards, crashing into a barricade along Maluba Hill highway outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.

It was towed by a tow truck company from the accident scene to their storage centre. This was before it was released to an approved African Independent repair centre.

The insurer paid the repair costs estimated at R90 000, but failed to cover the towing and storage costs.

Buswana submitted a separate claim of R17 000 and after an investigation that lasted about seven months, the insurer refused to reimburse her.

Hotline referred her complaint to Aatika Kaldine, a senior official at African Independent, who agreed to investigate the matter.

A week later, Kaldine concluded that the assessor had provided them with an incorrect description of the vehicle and this had led to the confusion. The company will therefore reimburse the client.
