Insurer pays. Client says there’s more

Following Hotline’s intervention, Maud Moletsane has received a pension-fund payout of R99 000 from Old Mutual.

“I am happy with this, but it is not enough,” said Moletsane, who worked for the Johannesburg municipality between 1985 and 1988, and rejoined the City of Joburg in 1995 until her resignation in March.

After resigning, she submitted all the necessary claim documents but the insurer “failed” to pay.

She approached Hotline last month for help after several months went by without any payment from Old Mutual.

Old Mutual’s client services manager Piet Spreeuwenberg explained that the delay in payment was because Moletsane’s Nedbank account was dormant at the time the benefit was supposed to go through.

However, Old Mutual managed to negotiate for the account to be reactivated.

While she was grateful that the money had finally been transferred into her account, Moletsane argued that she had not received benefits for the period between 1985 and 1988.

Spreeuwenberg said that Old Mutual started administering the Soweto city council pension fund  – the fund Moletsane belonged to – in 2001 and their records showed that Moletsane only started working for the city in 1995.

“We suggested that she contact Alexander Forbes as they are the consulting actuaries to the (Johannesburg municipality) fund.

“They should therefore be in a position to assist her in this regard,” he said.

Spreeuwenberg added that the R99 000 benefit included interest.

Moletsane said she would not rest until all her money had been paid.

She said she would visit Alexander Forbes to enquire about the contributions she made between 1985 and 1988.
