International music stars descend on Mzansi

» One of the biggest names in the hip-hop industry, Lil Wayne, is headed for Mzansi.

Despite being in demand following the recent release of his much-anticipated album Carter IV, Lil Wayne will have three performances in South Africa this December as part of his worldwide I Am Still Music tour.

The event’s promoters, Canoc Productions, which recently brought Trey Songz, said they view this as a coup for his local music fans.

Canoc’s Glen Netshipise said: “Few will argue with him being the best rapper alive. No rapper has made more hits in modern time than Lil Wayne and his live performances are to die for.”

The Grammy-winning, multiplatinum artist will perform in Cape Town on December 7 at the Bellville Velodrome, followed by a performance at the Coca-Cola Dome, Johannesburg, on December 9 and ending in Durban at the Wavehouse on December 11.

In the same week that Lil Wayne arrives in South Africa, his fellow Young Money stablemate Drake will also be in the country for an exclusive concert.

The multiaward-winning artist will be performing on December 9 at an intimate and exclusive show at the Castle Lite Feel the Beat of the Sub Zero experience.

Some of SA’s leading artists like Slikour will also perform before Drake hits the stage. Tickets are available at Computicket.

» John Legend to headline Nelspruit sixties party

Multi-Grammy award winner John Legend is fast making his way to becoming an honorary South African citizen as he makes his fourth trip to Mzansi.

The singer has been announced as the headline act of a four-day razzmatazz to take place from 13 to 15 October in Nelspruit in Mpumalanga.

The R&B sensation will perform in a one-night-only spectacular supported by local artists such as Zakes Bantwini, Theo Kgosinkwe, Teargas and Liquideep on October 15 at the Mbombela Stadium.

Ticket prices range between R225 (general), R500 (Golden Circle) and R1 650 for premium VIP suite.

The one-night-only concert is part of the four-day festival that starts on October 13. Tickets for October 14 at Emnotweni Arena, featuring some top club DJs, will go for R100.

On October 16, the last day of the weekend is the Sunday Soul Sessions at the Ngwenyama Lodge with the Metro FM slowjams trio, Wilson B Nkosi, Paul Mtirara and Eddie Zondi, featuring the legendary icon Hugh Masekela. Tickets retail at R110.

» International rap star to headline benefit concert in Kimberley

Not only does the town of Kimberley in the Northern Cape have The Big Hole but it now hosts The world’s greatest skateboarding event, the Maloof Money Cup.

This year, the event will see Grammy-winning artist, platinum producer and TV star Lil Jon headline the benefit concert on October 1.

“I’m excited to go for the first time and perform in Africa for the Maloof Money Cup,” said Lil Jon.

“The Maloofs pull together the best athletes and artists for this contest, and I’m always happy to be a part of it.”

The Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championships begin on September 30 until October 2 with a benefit concert that will feature top local performers like HHP, Jozi, Gang of Instrumentals, Kabelo, Danny K and Die Heuwel Fantasties.

The concert will benefit local charities. Tickets are available from Computicket outlets and range from R100 for unreserved standing and seating to R250 for Golden Circle tickets, which also include entry to the Maloof skate park.

» David Guetta to shake up Mzansi dance floors

Multi-Grammy winner, dancefloor wizard and chart-topping jockey David Guetta is coming to South Africa on October 14 for the St Yves Music Festival.

Guetta will be live on stage in South Africa with singer Akon, his “Sexy Bitch” collaborator. This festival will first hit Cape Town and then Johannesburg for a live spectacular following closely on the heels of the international launch for Guetta’s brand new album – Nothing But The Beat.

The DJ recently tweeted: “South Africa with @Akon - wow...this is gonna be amazing!”

Supporting acts include two renowned US DJs who are consistently ranked among the top 25 American DJs – Joe Bermudez and DJ Jenny LaFemme.

Popular local DJ Dean Fuel, who has opened for some of the world’s top DJs touring South Africa, will keep the beats alive, along with 5FM’s Poppy driving the stage action.

The venue for Cape Town is Thunder City while Wild Waters in Boksburg will be the venue for Johannesburg. Tickets are available from Computicket from R350, with R150 more if you’re paying at the door.

» Vikter Duplaix brings soulful house to local dance floors
If you prefer your house music on a soulful tip, look no further that Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Vikter Duplaix, who is also making his way to South Africa at the end of this month from September 30 to October 2.

“I look forward to coming back to South Africa. Last year when I came through, it was very rushed and brief, and I didn’t get to appreciate it properly. This time, I plan to enjoy every moment of it. I have a very entertaining performance lined up,” he said.

The “That Night” hit maker will be at club Taboo in Sandton on September 30.

The following day, he will be at The Village in Mamelodi, Pretoria. On October 2, there’s a sundowners session at Randlords in Braamfontein in Johannesburg and thereafter he ends the tour at the Soweto Cultural Village.

Ticket prices for the performance range from R150 to R250.

The legendary singer has garnered more than 2 600 Platinum and Gold certifications and sold over 350 million records around the world. He has performed with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Willie Nelson.

Iglesias will be in Joburg on November 5 and 6 at Carnival City Big Top Arena and in Cape Town at Grand West’s Grand Arena. Tickets are available from Computicket and cost R375 to R685.
