Family squabbles after the death of his two brothers inspired retired motoring garage manager Hubert Prevoo from Vereeniging to come up with the “Cup-Cof” – a cupboard that turns into a coffin.

Prevoo’s invention sparked interest after he advertised it on Gumtree this week.

His online advertisement reads: “It’s a cupboard for the present and a coffin for the future. Why let your family bear the expense of an expensive coffin and then bury or burn it? Now use your future coffin as a cupboard and save.”

The cupboards are human-sized with three shelves, which can be removed to make it a coffin.

The cupboards will also be sold with rope handles and velvet linings, which can be fitted postmortem.

The cupboard-coffins were marketed at R1?850 each, but at this early stage the price is not yet set in stone, said Prevoo. The 64-year-old entrepreneur is the former manager of a Volkswagengarage.

He told City Press that the invention sprang to mind after family members had to pitch in to buy coffins for his two brothers, who passed away in separate incidents.

“We fought, there was discord. And let’s face it, families are often stuck with this problem when someone dies,” he said.

Prevoo hopes to have a website selling the pieces up and running by the end of the month.

“So far, I’ve had two of them built. One for me and one for my wife Anette,” he said.

He tells a story of how he was lying in a cupboard-coffin to test its size when a neighbour walked by. “I was lying down in one outside on my lawn when a neighbour walked by. It was a bit odd,” he admitted.
