Isibaya makes clean sweep at Saftas

Isibaya once again proved to be the biggest soapie in Mzansi at the South African Film and Television Awards held this weekend at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

The daily soapie took seven awards of the 10 nods it received during the nomination process.

Rhythm City villain Jamie Bartlett took the best actor in a soapie award for his loveable villain David Genaro, while Masasa Mbangeni took the best actress in a soapie for her role as the bitchy Thandeka on Scandal. The best supporting actress in a soapie was Marjorie Langa, who plays the role of Gloria on’s Scandal.

The biggest losers were Pallance Dladla, who was nominated for the best supporting actor in a TV soap award as Jabu Zungu on Isibaya, as well as best actor in a lead role in a feature film for his role as TK in Bonnie and Clyde-esque crime thriller Hard To Get. Dladla was nominated in the same category as his friend and compatriot S’dumo Mtshali, who plays Chilli on the crime thriller iNumber Number.

The two actors were so livid that they did not wait for the awards to end. They screamed and cursed all the way to the parking lot, voicing their displeasure at being pipped by the youngest actor to walk away with a Golden Horn, Jezriel Skei, who took the best lead actor in a feature film award from right under their noses.

The best feature film winner, Four Corners, walked away with six awards from 13 nominations, including the coveted Golden Horn for best feature film and the best actor and best supporting actor awards.

Newcomer Thishiwe Ziqubu took the best actress in a lead role in a feature film for her role as Skiets in Hard To Get.

Thomas Gumede, who honoured his mother Mpumie Njobe for having raised three boys as a single mother, took the best lead actor in a lead role TV comedy for his contribution as Zanele in Single Guys.

Veteran actor Fezile Mpela was modest in his achievement as supporting actor in a drama series as Zwide on Afrikaans drama Donkerland.

“Acting is never an individual success. Even for individual categories, your success comes from somewhere. It is always teamwork no matter how brilliant you are.”

Nthati Moshesh, who took the honours in the best actress in a TV drama category for her role as Dibuseng Makwarela in Thola, was equally modest, saying her work was a culmination of “passion, dedication and a positive attitude” towards her craft.

Brenda Ngxoli was not present to accept her awards. She was given the best supporting actress in a TV comedy award as well as best supporting actress in a drama series for Ses’ Top La and Rockville respectively.

Some of the misses this year included the announcement that Gumede had won his first Safta. Last night was his second – he won his first in 2009 as best actor in a drama series for his role as Siphiwe in A Place Called Home.

Then there were also sound issues, which nine years later have still not been resolved.

TV presenter and businesswoman Bonang Matheba had her hopes raised when Mbali Mlotshwa called her name before opening the envelope to announce the inaugural best TV presenter award voted for by the public. Instead, Expresso Morning Show presenter Katlego Maboe emerged as the winner.
