‘It wasn’t me’: Nathi Mthethwa on closed voter-registration stations

2013-11-09 14:54

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has rubbished reports that he has ordered voter registration stations in Bekkersdal to close down.

He told City Press: “Whoever is saying that is talking rubbish.”

“Why would I order stations to shut down?” He asked.

“My job is to ensure that the community is safe. And that is why I am here today to ensure that people who want to exercise their right of registering are not intimidated,” he said.

Mthethwa visited the area today to monitor the situation following media reports that protesters had vowed to disrupt registration this weekend.

He moved from one station to another, speaking to IEC officials who said they feared for their lives. But Mthethwa assured them the police would be there to protect them.

By 1pm two voter registrations in Bekkersdal had closed.
