Tempy Pushas

SABC1

Friday, 8.30pm

SABC1’s popular drama series Tempy Pushas made a welcome return last Friday.

Set in the fashion world, with township culture at its core, the show is about two rival fashion houses headed by opposing families.

Pushing the tempy life are three childhood friends – Sdumo Mtshali, Pallance Dladla and Akhumzi Jezile – who have to negotiate a world divided by the haves and the have-nots.

The second season started off with a bang. We were treated to glitz and glamour with the wedding of protaganist Kuti (Mtshali) to his sweetheart Princess (Tumie Ngumla).

Twitter was abuzz as the two tied the knot, with everyone loving the couple’s vows and Princess’ beautiful dress. Not to mention the drama. Her brother Zenzele (Khulu Skenjana) is her new husband’s rival in the fashion business. Zenzele is so powerful, though, that Kuti and his army of friends and allies have been unable to prove he was involved in the murder of Kuti’s mother in season one.

What carries the story line forward is the gritty realness of the bromance between the three childhood friends. The rivalry and back-stabbing between the fashion houses, friends and family members is always entertaining.

There are also plenty of funny moments to lighten up the story line as the friends hustle their way into the fashion and film industries.

I missed some of the cast members, including Mothusi Magano as Dot Org and Precious Makgaretsa as Dineo, who have not returned this season. The two always managed to rock the boat.

But Tempy Pushas pushes the acting and scripting envelope like no other local drama series and the fireworks are endless. I will be glued to my screen until the season finale.
