It’s official: Cape Town beats Joburg in fashion stakes

2014-02-05 08:33

Cape Town has overtaken Joburg in the Top Global Fashion Capital rankings, compiled by the US-based Global Language Monitor.

Joburg has earned a place among the world’s top 40 fashion cities but it slipped to number 37, from a place in the top 20 on the 2012 list.

In 2012, the compilers wrote: “Though Joburg won the latest duel, Cape Town surely has plans.”

Indeed, Cape Town, which was number 54 in 2012, jumped to number 27. It is among big climbers such as St Petersburg and New Delhi.

New York beat Paris to earn the title of fashion capital of the world – by a mere 0.5%.

The internet, blogosphere, the top 250 000 print and electronic news media and social media are analysed to arrive at the rankings.

“The Top Global Fashion Capitals are based on a years-long longitudinal study that tracks three distinct classes of words and phrases that define contemporary fashion ... The words, phrases and concepts are tracked in relation to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets,” the compilers say.
