Days of voting for the party not the candidate are over

Tshilidzi Neluvhalani

Cape Town

Since I come from a small town in a former homeland, voting for the ANC is second nature to my generation in the fairly recent democratic era.

The rationale is that “you vote for the party and not the candidate”. But when the only viable party to vote for churns out redundant and incompetent cadres, it forces one to reconsider one’s options.

I am a black youngster and the future looks very grim. Unemployment is crippling, the economy is stagnant, corruption is rampant and education is in disarray.

Instead of inflammatory decisions and questionable public policies, the least the president and the party can do is calm already jittery nerves.

I don’t know how much longer I can vote for the party and not the candidate, considering the social developments on the national front.

I can only hope the transition from struggle heroes to the modern youth is a seamless one. I need a capable, honest and qualified leader to depend on.
