Itumeleng Khune speeding case heads for finality

2014-03-24 14:12

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune may know his fate in the case of reckless and negligent driving against him come April 1.

The matter did not proceed in the Lyttelton Magistrates’ Court today because the chief prosecutor, to whom Khune lawyers have made representations, was ill and not at work.

“Any delay based on a just cause is no big deal. We are not aggrieved,” said Khune’s lawyer, William Maodi.

“We filed representations with the chief prosecutor. As you heard, on April 1 this matter will be put to rest and that will be our last day here.”

Maodi would not elaborate on the representations.

It is unclear whether a diversion offer is on the cards, which would enable Khune to avoid a criminal record.

The acrobatic goalkeeper was arrested on January 24 for allegedly driving at 173km/h in a 120km/h zone and released on R1 500 bail.

He was dropped off at court by a driver early this morning. Dressed in a silver-blue suit, Khune looked relaxed but seemed to tire of waiting for his appearance, which only happened shortly before 12.30pm.

This is the fourth postponement in the matter.
