ANC MP Jackson Mthembu was shot last night when thugs tried to rob him at a Mpumalanga ATM.

Mthembu is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, according to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

“The criminal came from behind and pointed a firearm at him. Mthembu turned around and tried to grab it. He was shot in the cheek,” Mohlala said.

The incident happened at the Absa ATM on Mandela Street in Emalahleni (formerly Witbank) where Mthembu grew up.

Mohlala said that four people who were in the car that Mthembu was driving were also robbed of their cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money.

“We’ve opened an armed robbery case and no one has been arrested,” Mohlala said.

Mthembu was ANC national spokesperson before he was deployed to Parliament. He has served as speaker in the Mpumalanga legislature and MEC for public works, roads and transport.
