Jackson the July rockstar

2012-07-07 21:57

His name is Jackson.

He’s three years old and this weekend, he was the star of the Vodacom Durban July.

The July’s spokesperson Dave Macleod said Jackson could easily become as popular as his musical counterpart – the late, great Michael.

“Jackson is a people’s horse. Everyone loves him, he’s got rock star quality,” gushed Macleod.

He said there had been greater interest than usual in the race this year – and credited the thoroughbred, trained by Brett Crawford, for this.

“When the betting opened,” Macleod said, “It was a two-horse race between Jackson and Slumdogmillionaire. But when Slumdog pulled out due to injury, it just became about Jackson.”

The hype may not have been worth it for those who bet on Jackson – Pomodoro won the main race. But Jackson remained the horse everyone was talking about.

Macleod said the event was attended by 55 000 people, 5 000 of whom were “serious hardcore punters”.

“Even with that number, about R200 million would have been bet between the people here and those at home.”
