President Jacob Zuma has expressed sadness at the death of struggle stalwart Ayesha “Bibi” Dawood.

“We have lost a committed activist and veteran of our struggle for freedom,” Zuma said today.

“On behalf of myself, the government and the people of South Africa, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to her children, grandchildren and other members of her family.”

Zuma’s spokesperson Mac Maharaj said Dawood was a great South African and recipient of the National Order of Luthuli.

She passed away at the weekend.

“Ayesha Dawood rose to prominence as a struggle activist in Worcester, Western Cape, and was one of the leaders charged in the 1956 Treason Trial,” Maharaj said.

Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesperson Danielle Melville sent condolences on behalf of the board of trustees to friends and family of Dawood.

Melville said Dawood was an accused along with Nelson Mandela and 153 others in the infamous 1956 Treason Trial.

“Her sacrifices for a free and democratic South Africa will never be forgotten,” she said.
