President Jacob Zuma has arrived in New York for the 68th session of the UN General Assembly.

Zuma would be addressing the assembly tomorrow on the progress made by South Africa on its 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDG) target, the presidency said.

“What is more impressive with the achievement of this target is that the proportion of girls attending primary, secondary and tertiary education has improved significantly,” Zuma said in a statement.

“The attainment of the MDG target on education is significant for a number of reasons. Education is central to development and can serve as a catalyst to address gender disparities.

“Moreover, education is the primary vehicle by which vulnerable children can lift themselves out of poverty and obtain the means to participate meaningfully in the economy,” said Zuma.

South Africa has eight goals to achieve:

» Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger;

» Provide universal primary education;

» Promote gender equality and empower women;

» Reduce child mortality;

» Improve maternal health;

» Combat HIV and Aids, malaria and other diseases;

» Ensure environmental sustainabililty; and

» Develop a global partnership for development.

Zuma said South Africa was making progress with its goals and that maternal and child mortality had reduced.

Mother-to-child transmission of HIV had gone down from 8.5% in 2008 to 2.7% in 2011, he said.

Zuma was travelling with International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini.
