It’s official. Wilmot James is standing for the position of federal leader of the Democratic Alliance.

“I can confirm that I have decided to stand,” said James in a short statement released just before noon.

“I have received overwhelming support from colleagues and friends across the party and have been encouraged to make myself available.”

“I will therefore spend the next two weeks sharing my vision for the future of our party and our country with delegates who will be attending the Democratic Alliance’s federal congress in Nelson Mandela Bay.”

DA member of Parliament David Maynier is James’ campaign manager.

James will be standing against parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane, who got a lead start by putting his name forward last Saturday.

Both candidates are due to attend the KwaZulu-Natal regional congress this weekend, and will hit the campaign trail officially from Sunday with closed-door debates to delegates around the country in the build-up to the federal congress on May 9.
