Jean de Villiers hoping for special last test at Newlands

2013-09-28 09:46

With his workload having to be managed to keep him fresh for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, today could well be his last test at Newlands.

“I don’t know how many opportunities I’ll get to play for the Springboks at Newlands. This might be my last test at Newlands. So you want to make it special, even if it’s your 50th or your first. When you put the jersey on, you want to make it special,” De Villiers said.

Fourie du Preez is set to make his first start on home soil since the 2011 test against New Zealand in Port Elizabeth. It is a return that made De Villiers very happy, saying his experience will be very valuable, especially if the conditions take a turn for the worse.

“Sometimes, looking from the outside in, you see things differently. It’s nice for a guy who has been here, to come in again and say we should look to do things a bit differently. They are subtle changes and I hope you guys will see them when we play,” De Villiers said.

Wallaby captain James Horwill said his team would look to do most of the talking on the field.

“The best way we can change perceptions about us is with us doing stuff on the field and not saying too much. We’ve got to go out and do it and not talk about it. We have to put it out in practice,” Horwill said.

“If you go on our last effort against South Africa, we did not play well at all. They played very well and that was on our home patch.

“They certainly deserve to be favourites, there’s no doubt about that. We need to play better than what we have been doing.”
