Jhb rock band to open for 30 Seconds to Mars

2010-11-03 09:05

JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg rock band BLK JKS has been confirmed as

the support act for world class band 30 Seconds to Mars’ South African tour,

M-Net and 5FM announced today.

“Having done the country proud on an international stage in

delivering a sterling performance at the opening concert of the Fifa World Cup,

we are far from surprised that the BLK JKS have been chosen to open for 30

Seconds to Mars,” 5FM programme manager Vukile Zondi said in a statement.

BLK JKS was founded in 2000 by guitarists Lindani Buthelezi and

Mpumi Mcata, who grew up together on Johannesburg’s East Rand.

They were joined by Soweto residents Molefi Makananise on bass and

Tshepang Ramoba on drums and made their international recording debut in 2007

with a limited-edition 10 inch vinyl release of the single “Lakeside”,

organisers said.

In 2008, the band got a recording contract with Secretly Canadian,

one of America’s premier indie rock labels.

The Los Angeles-based 30 Seconds to Mars’ trio Jared Leto, Shannon

Leto and Tomo Milicevic performed in South Africa at the Coke Fest in 2008 and

were returning in to the country this month.

The band has sold over 3.5 million albums world-wide and has won

numerous music awards.

They will perform at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg on November

19 and at the Grand Arena in Cape Town on November 20 and 21.
