Joburg court postpones Mandela crash case

2011-01-31 07:27

A Johannesburg magistrate has warned the State he was growing impatient with postponement applications in the murder case against Sizwe Mankazana, the driver of the car in which Nelson Mandela’s great granddaughter was killed.

The Star newspaper reported today that Magistrate Simon Radisi had ordered the State to “sort out” their problems, adding that he would no longer accept more postponements.

This was after the defence complained that the State was withholding information it needed to prepare for the trial.

Mankazana (23) was originally facing a drunken driving charge and a culpable homicide charge, but the latter was later converted to murder.

He was driving the car when it overturned and killed 13-year-old Zenani Mandela on their way back from a Soccer World Cup concert.

Zenani (13) was Mandela’s great granddaughter.

His daughter Zindzi Mandela was Zenani’s grandmother.

Mankazana was expected to appear before court again on March 17.
