Joburg doesn’t have most congested roads in SA

Cape Town is the city with the most congested roads in South Africa, according to the Tom Tom South African Traffic Index.

The index covered six cities in South Africa over 2013, the Mother City’s congestion level was 27%, up from 25% last year.

Joburg was in second place, with 25% compared with 24% last year.

The percentage relates to the amount of increased travel time in heavy traffic, when compared with free-flowing traffic.

East London was third with 22%.

Pretoria (also 22%), Durban (18%), and Bloemfontein (12%) rounded out the rankings, with South Africa’s overall congestion being at 21%.

Congestion in these three cities also rose compared to last year.

The highest morning peak was Cape Town, at 71%, followed by Joburg and Pretoria.

Evening peaks were led by Cape Town (58%), followed by Joburg and East London.

Peaks were the busiest one-hour period in the morning and evening in each city.

Looking at highway congestion among the six, Cape Town was first with 20% followed by Joburg with 15%.

Non-highways were more congested than highways, with both Joburg and Cape Town scoring 30%.

The busiest day for morning peak period, evening peak period, and the delay per hour driven in peak period in each city were as follows:

» Cape Town: Monday, Thursday, 38 minutes;

» Johannesburg: Monday, 34 minutes;

» East London: Monday, Tuesday, 28 minutes;

» Pretoria: Monday, Friday, 27 minutes;

» Durban: Monday, Friday, 24 minutes; and

» Bloemfontein: Tuesday, 13 minutes.

The most congested day of traffic in each city last year, and the accumulated delay per year with a 30 minute commute were:

» Cape Town: Friday, March 8 and 89 hours;

» Johannesburg: Friday, November 29, and 83 hours;

» East London: Friday, May 31, and 73 hours;

» Pretoria: Monday, February 11, and 71 hours;

» Durban: Tuesday, March 26, and 65 hours; and

» Bloemfontein: Friday, January 18 and 40 hours;

The top five most congested cities in the world were Moscow, with 74%, followed by Istanbul (62%), Rio de Janeiro (55%), Mexico City (54%), and Sao Paulo (46%).
