Jomo Sono and Teenage Dladla are among the former football stars who will represent the SA Masters against their Italian counterparts at the Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day.

Their team, Bafana Bafana and the Springboks will be in action on August 17 at the FNB Stadium.

The SA Masters will raise the curtain at 10.30am in a football match, followed by Bafana Bafana, who will square up against 2013 Afcon finalists Burkina Faso in a 3pm kickoff.

Then the Springboks will end the on-pitch proceedings against Argentina at 5pm.

The day-long event will culminate in a concert.

The concept behind the event is to celebrate former president Nelson Mandela’s vision of nation-building through sport.

Speaking at a media briefing at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg today, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said there would also be a gala dinner on the eve of the event.

“The occasion will also help in raising funds for the building of the children’s hospital to fulfil Madiba’s wish,” said Mbalula at an event today, which was attended by sports federations presidents and coaches of the codes that will be in action on August 17.

Bafana coach Gordon Igesund said: “It has been long time coming that football, rugby and cricket come together. It is an honour to play in the event of this magnitude and I’ll let my guys go out there and enjoy themselves.”

Igesund will announce a bloated squad on Tuesday as Bafana will also play Nigeria in the Nelson Mandela Challenge in Durban on August 14.

Meanwhile, former Bafana coach Screamer Tshabalala announced legendary Sono and Dladla among the players that will turn out for the local masters.

Tshabalala, the first man to lead the national team after South Africa’s readmission to international sport, will guide the team, along with 1996 Afcon-winning coach Clive Barker.

It was expected that former Italy star Roberto Baggio would be in the Italian side, but his name was not there. The team is made up of unfamiliar players.

The confirmed artists are Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Black Coffee, DJ Antonio, Toya DeLayze and Salif Keita from Mali.

Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu will entertain guests at the pre-event gala dinner.
