Journo detained despite dropped charges

2010-08-05 12:43

Sunday Times journalist Mzilikazi Wa Afrika’s case has been thrown out of court but he is still being detained.

According to the Sunday Times’ website, the KwaBokweni court prosecutor, one Mr Erwee, declined to prosecute Wa Afrika, saying he had no case to answer.

The newspaper’s lawyers were reportedly discussing their next move following the refusal of the Hawks to release Wa Afrika.

Neither Hawks spokesperson Musa Zondi nor Sunday Times editor Ray Hartley could immediately be reached for comment.

Wa Afrika had been arrested in connection with charges relating to defeating the ends of justice and fraud.

The charges apparently relate to allegations that Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza had resigned.

Meanwhile the two other accused have yet to appear in court.
