The yearly Standard Bank Joy of Jazz is placing the Joburg inner city in the groove this weekend.

The festival opened last night on a blue note after the local headline act, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, buried his ex-wife a day before he stepped on stage.

However, tonight promises jazz lovers a more festive approach. Proceedings are scheduled to start at 7pm.

Here are the performances we suggest you make sure to catch tonight.

Bassline: The Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band will be the first to take to the stage at 7pm. Their exceptional display of youthful verve and musical talent should help you start your night on a high note.

Dinaledi Stage: Terence Blanchard, the American trumpeter, goes on stage at midnight. He brings the same quintet that he’s been gigging with for the past decade. They will be showcasing the music from his latest album, Magnetic.

Conga Stage: At 10pm the best place to be is probably with Ivan Mazuze’s multinational band. The Mozambican reedman is now based in Norway and has brought Omar Sosa, the Cuban piano wizard, with him.

They will showcase music from Mazuze’s album, Ndzuti.

Mbira Stage: For music lovers who prefer their jazz with some popular tunes in between, Zonke, the house music songstress, will offer a bit of light-hearted respite.

She starts belting it out at 10.45pm.

The free stages: There are also various venues that require no entrance fee.

Restaurants in the Newtown precinct, including Nikki’s Oasis, Sophiatown and Shikisha host some performances by up-and-coming musicians.
