Joyi against Budler: Winner takes all

2013-06-11 16:01

The winner of Saturday’s superfight between International Boxing Organisation (IBO) minimumweight champion Hekkie “The Hex” Budler and Nkosinathi “Mabhere” Joyi stands a chance for a unification title bout in August with one of the world’s top sanctioning bodies.

This was revealed by Golden Gloves Promotions (GGP) boss Rodney Berman today during a press conference at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Joburg.

“Discussions are at an advanced stage to have the winner on Saturday getting a shot in a unification title fight in August,” said Berman.

“I wish to bring that fight to South Africa,” he added.

In a fired up exchange of words between Budler’s manager Colin Nathan and Joyi’ manager Siphato Handi, it became evident that stakes were high for the bout dubbed “Final Reckoning” and that neither camp wants to lose.

Handi put it to Nathan that they made a big mistake by signing up to fight Joyi, thinking he was finished.

“This is an opportunity for Joyi to get to the WBC (World Boxing Council) belt and Budler is standing in our way, but come fight night we will get rid of him,” he said.

Nathan fired back, praising Joyi for being “a great fighter and Budler is a good fighter and on Saturday we will see Budler becoming the great fighter when he defeats Joyi”.

The victor, besides the exorbitant purse money and the belt, will also walk away with a trophy – something unusual in boxing, which makes the bout arguably the biggest in South Africa’s boxing history.
