Joyi braces for Triple Thunder

2013-07-30 16:09

Former two-time minimumweight world champion Nkosinathi “Mabhere” Joyi will challenge Benezer Alolod from Philippines for the World Boxing Council (WBC) international title on August 31 at Emperors Palace.

This was revealed by sponsors Golden Gloves Promotions in a press conference today at the same venue.

Joyi’s promoter, Siphato Handi, insisted “there’s nothing to redeem (for Joyi) because every boxer wins some and loses some”.

Joyi was defeated by International Boxing Organisation minimumweight titleholder Hekkie “The Hex” Budler in June during a fight that was dubbed as South Africa’s biggest in recent history.

Once praised as of one of the country’s world-class gladiators, the 30-year-old Joyi’s career has been on a downward spiral since blemishing his record for the first time last year in September and his second loss against Budler.

Handi added that Lennox Mpulampula was going to continue as chief trainer for Joyi, who looked stiff and tired in his previous scrap.

The August 31 fight night named “Triple Thunder” will feature three WBC bouts, history in the making as this happens for the first time on African soil.

Cruiserweight sensation Ilunga “Jr” Makabu, in a faceoff with Eric Fields, will defend his WBC Silver cruiserweight crown.

Hardworking Ryno “Lion” Liebenburg will get a shot to lay his hands on the WBC international silver belt when he collides with Argentinian Gabrial Ramirez.

A rematch between SA light heavyweight champion Tshepang Mohale and challenger Johnny Muller will wrap up the bill for the night.
