Jozi Soul in Zurich – In search of a little bit of home

2011-09-01 07:08

Humans are such strange folk.

We love to explore our world but some of us are really uncomfortable with the idea of being a complete stranger surrounded by all things foreign.

With a four-hour wait for our connecting flight from Munich to Zurich, I had plenty time to get a sense of a space completely new to me.

It was a little while into my walk through the airport that I realised this very strange thing my mind was doing.

Back home, race defines and divides us, yet here I was actively seeking familiar faces to identify with – faces that looked like mine.

Needless to say, it’s very hard to find brown faces with dreadlocks in these parts of the world.

And being the only one with dreads is a totally new experience for this Jozi Soul.

I soon gave up that futile mission and searched for anything that evoked even the slightest sense of home.

Seeing Nestea in a store fridge made me smile, I was drawn to newspapers I couldn’t even read and was even willingly sucked into the celeb gossip I usually run away from.

Only in a strange Munich airport could I find an article about Brad Pitt’s new drug den oh-so-interesting.

I mean, it’s Brad Pitt: someone I “know” – finally! Hmm, I wonder what else I’ll find.

I hear there’s a sausage here that tastes better than boerewors ...

PS. I did get a chance to taste that sausage that dared to challenge the wors we know and love and I’m happy to report that the Weisswurst has absolutely nothing on our good ol’ South African boerewors.
